How Much Does It Cost to Custom Design a Hockey Jersey?

By Tayyab, Lethletic Sportswear — Custom Sports Manufacturer, Sialkot, Pakistan

If you've ever tried to get a straight answer on what a custom hockey jersey actually costs, you've probably run into vague "contact us for pricing" pages and zero real numbers. This post is different. I'm Tayyab, founder of Lethletic, and we manufacture custom hockey jerseys for teams, leagues, and brands worldwide. I'm going to give you the real numbers, the real factors, and the honest advice that most manufacturers won't.

What Actually Affects the Cost of a Custom Hockey Jersey?

Before we get to the numbers, you need to understand what moves the price up or down. There are two main drivers: customization method and quantity.

1. Customization Method: Sublimation vs. Embroidery vs. Tackle Twill

Sublimation is the most common method used in modern sportswear manufacturing. Here's how it works: the design is printed onto special paper, which is then pressed onto the fabric at over 150°C. The heat transfers the color directly into the fabric fibers — they literally become one. The result? A design that will never crack, peel, or fade, no matter how many washes or games it goes through. And here's the key pricing advantage: whether all 20 jerseys have different names and numbers or the same ones, the cost stays the same. It's just printing.

Embroidery is a classic, premium look — thread stitched directly into the fabric. It looks great, especially for logos. But the cost logic is different. An embroidery machine has to be set up and run for every jersey, so low quantities get expensive fast. And if every player has a different name or number, each one requires a separate setup — which pushes the price up further.

Tackle Twill is a specific type of embroidery where a separate piece of fabric (cut into the shape of letters or numbers) is layered onto the jersey and then stitched down around the edges with a zigzag stitch. It's the method you see on professional NHL jerseys — that raised, premium feel. It looks incredible, but it costs more and takes more time.

2. Quantity: Why Ordering More Saves You Money

This is the part most first-time buyers don't fully understand. When you order 20 jerseys with embroidered logos, the machine has to run for each individual piece. That setup cost gets divided across fewer jerseys, so each one costs more. Order 100 jerseys and that same machine cost is spread much further — your per-piece price drops significantly.

Real Pricing: What You'll Actually Pay

Here are the real numbers we work with at Lethletic, including estimated shipping to the USA and UK:

Minimum Order Matrix (20 Jerseys)

Type Per Jersey Shipping (USA/UK) Total Per Jersey
Sublimation only $15 $4–$6 $19–$21
Embroidery (same names/numbers) $20 $4–$6 $24–$26
Embroidery (different names/numbers) $22 $4–$6 $26–$28

Mid-Tier Production (50 Jerseys)

Type Per Jersey Shipping (USA/UK) Total Per Jersey
Sublimation only $14 $3–$5 $17–$19
Embroidery (same names/numbers) $18 $3–$5 $21–$23
Embroidery (different names/numbers) $20 $3–$5 $23–$25

Bulk Volume Tier (100 Jerseys)

Type Per Jersey Shipping (USA/UK) Total Per Jersey
Sublimation only $13 $2–$4 $15–$17
Embroidery (same names/numbers) $17 $2–$4 $19–$21
Embroidery (different names/numbers) $19 $2–$4 $21–$23

Note: Shipping costs to Europe and Canada may vary slightly and can sometimes be lower. Always confirm with your manufacturer at the time of quoting.

What Add-Ons Affect the Final Price?

Beyond the jersey itself, customers building out specialized sports lines or full clothing options like custom casual collections commonly request:

  • Custom woven labels — your brand name sewn inside the collar instead of a generic tag
  • Custom hang tags — branded tags attached to the jersey for retail or gifting
  • Custom packaging — individual poly bags or boxes branded with your logo, perfect for team gifts or retail

Each of these adds to the per-piece cost but significantly elevates the perceived quality and professionalism of the final product — especially important if you're building a brand rather than just outfitting a team.

The Mistakes Most First-Time Buyers Make

After working with hundreds of customers, the same issues come up again and again.

1. Not knowing what the jersey will actually look like before production.

This is the biggest one. Customers approve a design on a flat digital file and then are surprised when the logo placement looks off on an actual 3D jersey, or the stripes don't line up from front to back. At Lethletic, we solve this completely with CLO 3D design simulations. Before a single piece of fabric is cut, you see a photorealistic 3D rendering of exactly what your jersey will look like — the exact sizing of logos, the exact spacing of stripes, how everything sits on a 3D body. You approve it, then we produce it. No surprises.

2. Not specifying fabric.

"Sports fabric" is not a specification. There's a huge variety of breathable mesh fabrics used in hockey jerseys — different textures, feels, weights (gramage), and performance levels. A good manufacturer will give you options and samples so you can choose exactly what you want.

A Real Case Study: The Most Precise Order We've Ever Made

One customer came to us with requirements that most manufacturers simply couldn't fulfill. His checklist included:

  • Stripes that were sewn on — not printed — for a premium, structured look
  • A shoulder pattern that had to run perfectly straight and match from the front panel to the back panel
  • Stripe widths that were millimeter-specific: exactly 13mm and 22mm on each stripe
  • Tackle twill lettering and numbering
  • Custom sizing outside standard measurements

We ran the entire design through our CLO 3D simulation first. He could see exactly how the stripes would sit, how the shoulder pattern would align, and how the tackle twill would look. Once he approved the simulation, we went into production. Everything came out exactly as shown. That level of precision is only possible when you have the right process — and the right tools.

How Long Does It Take?

Here's our standard timeline at Lethletic:

  • Under 100 jerseys: 2 weeks production + 4–5 days express shipping = approximately 3 weeks door to door
  • 100–300 jerseys: 3 weeks production + 4–5 days express shipping = approximately 4 weeks door to door

If you're ordering for a season, tournament, or league — plan ahead. Three to four weeks is tight if you're cutting it close to your start date.

How to Choose the Right Manufacturer

Whether you work with us or someone else, here's how to evaluate a manufacturer before handing over your money:

Green flags:

  • They can show you jerseys they've actually made — real photos, real products
  • They have verifiable experience in hockey-specific manufacturing (not just general sportswear)
  • They offer a 3D mockup or simulation so you know exactly what you're getting before production starts
  • They provide a clear size chart and can confirm logo sizing and placement in advance

Red flags:

  • No samples or portfolio of past work
  • Vague answers about fabric and construction methods
  • No pre-production approval process
  • Prices that seem too good to be true (they usually are)

The Single Best Piece of Advice for First-Time Buyers

If you already have a design ready, here's exactly what to do:

  1. Ask for a mockup — any serious manufacturer should be able to show you what your jersey will look like
  2. Ask for a size chart — so you know exactly which sizes to order for your players
  3. Ask about logo sizing and placement — this is where most mistakes happen, and it can only be done properly if your manufacturer uses CLO 3D or a similar simulation tool

That third step is the one most people skip — and it's the one that causes the most headaches. A flat mockup shows you the design. A 3D simulation shows you the jersey.
